How-To Use
 FauxToys Wraps

INSTRUCTIONS and INSTALLATION TIPS –

FauxToys Wraps for the
ROTARY SNOWPLOW

FauxToys' ROTARY SNOWPLOW wraps are designed to fit the Marx® 6" tin caboose.

FauxToys recommends Marx's® common red-over-grey NYC caboose for the snowplow wrap, since it has a roofwalk, but the dark-red NYC caboose and the brown-roofed UP cabooses can also be used without repainting.

Choose a caboose with a good cupola, if possible, even if you are repainting the roof.

Rotary snowplow wraps can be mounted permanently on refinished and low-value cars, or temporarily on valued cars.

INSTRUCTIONS

Protecting the Wraps (Optional Step) - FauxToys wraps are tough and water-resistant. However pressing hard on the wrap with wet hands may leave permanent fingerprints in the gloss surface. Two coats of common paste wax will give increased protection to the surface. See Details.

ADHESIVE NOTES – FauxToys recommends Scotch® Double-sided tape for assembly. (Be careful – do NOT get Scotch Removable Double-stick tape). Bargain brands of double-sided tape have not proven satisfactory.

Spray cement or contact cement can be used, but Double-Sided tape is by far the easiest, neatest and safest adhesive for the wraps in either temporary or permanent applications.

Cyanoacrylate cement ('super glue') seems to work well for those pieces with smaller surface area where d-s tape will not do the job. Fine-point tweezers are recommended with cyano cements.

Water-based glue such as Elmer's® may warp the wrap.

Disassembly and Refinishing - If the car has an end ladder, remove it. (On original Marx® cars, the cupola is near the end with NO coupler. If it is not, the car has been improperly reassembled; carefully loosen the tabs the minimum amount necessary for removal, turn the body around on the frame, and tighten the tabs).

Repaint the car roof and frame, if necessary. See Painting Tips. If the cupola finish is reasonable, FauxToys recommends using it without repainting, so remove it before repainting the roof.

Preparing the Panels - Cut out all paper parts, using a sharp hobby knife and metal straightedge, or scissors.

Darken the edges with a black marker or a marker of the color the edge will be bordering. Work from behind when darkening the edges.

On the paper Fan Housing, fold the side and top cowling pieces forward, then fold the light part of the top cowling piece backward again.

Fold back the small panels on the bottom corners.

For permanent mounting, cut the black Tabs E and F off the body side panels. (Tabs are marked on the wrap sheet).

Cut the notches, as indicated, and fold back sharply at the notches to create overlapping end panels.

Fold back Tabs A and B.

Gently roll the snow exhausts until they curve well back.

Glue the Fan Housing inside the angled parts of the paper Body sides. Glue Tabs A and B under the UPPER section (only!) of the Fan Housing top. The lower section should angle downward slightly.
The small back-folding tabs should just clear the bottoms of the sides.

For permanent installation, put double-stick tape along the upper and lower edges of the backs of the Body side panels and the edges of the end panels.

For temporary installation, put double-stick tape on the overlapping end flap only.

Stick the end panel with the FauxToys copyright notice under the roof overhang on the coupler end of the caboose.

Working from the corner, smooth the side panel onto the caboose side, and slide the top panel of the Fan Housing under the roof overhang. Working backward, smooth the remaining side panel onto the caboose side. Stick down the remaining end panel, overlapping the copyright notice on the first end-panel.

Bend back Tab C on the headlight and glue it between the Fan Housing and the roof overhang. Glue the headlight itself to the front of the caboose roof. If you have painted the cupola, cut out and glue on the paper cupola windows.
