When converting a Marx® 6" caboose to a freight car or observation car, it is easy to fill in the slots for the cupola tabs and railing ladder. Note that the slots will have some burrs and deformed metal around them which will have to be sanded or filed flush with the roof contour. Caboose pictured has FauxToys 2209 Platform Filler installed in front platform to give strength to rounded front end of observation car wrap. |

How to Do It Remove the caboose body and cupola, being careful to bend the tabs only the minimum amount necessary. Place a piece of ordinary household tape over the slots from the inside. Make sure the tape is secure. If the interior is too dusty or rusted to hold the tape well, clean, sand or polish the metal. Smooth water-based wood-filler putty or spackling compound into the slots from above, being careful to leave the putty above the level of the metal. Allow to dry thoroughly. With a smooth file or fine sandpaper, sand down the putty and the burrs at the slot edge until they form a smooth curve. Prime roof and allow to dry according to primer manufacturer's instructions. Sand the priming with fine sandpaper to remove the last irregularities. Wipe off the dust before painting. Paint the roof. |
