  Roll-Opening Tool

Occasionally the rolled edges on tin gondolas, hoppers, and other cars are too tight to allow the FauxToys wrap to slip under them as intended. You can easily make the simple tool below to open the rolls slightly.

Making theTool
Search the back of your closet for a wire coathanger of the old-fashioned heavier gauge wire (about 3/32"). Cut about 7" out of the straight part with wirecutters, or cutting pliers.

File the ends to remove any sharp burrs or edges and use pliers to bend the last inch or so backwards to function as a handle on one end.

File the other end to form a rounded taper.
No need to take it to a sharp point.

Using the tool
Support the car on a table. Keeping your other hand out of the way, gently work the tool into each end of the tight roll. Often, inserting the tool only a half-inch or so on each end will loosen the roll enough to slide the wrap under it.
