In The Pipe

New Titles & Products  Now in Development for
The (Virtual) Armchair General
The following items are in varying stages of completion, so keep an eye on TVAG for news and release dates.

Mexican War Flags Collection

The Mexican War Flags Collection!

As part of the latest ongoing project, Gone To See The Elephant, rules for the Mexican-American War, 1846-1848, Eric Cox and P.R. Wilson are busily researching
and creating this latest collection for wargamers.

With the help of researchers in Mexico, as well as the US, we are finding information and materials on Mexican and US military Colors and Standards never previously assembled. With his constant obsession for detail and accuracy, Eric Cox is devoting uncounted hours of hard work to exactly matching as many Mexican Flags as he can in precise detail.

When completed, Colors and Standards for all units which fought in the War (and which would have carried them) will be released in at least two Sets, Mexican and US. As usual, this will be the definitive collection, with specific flags for specific units, as authentically as we can represent them.

We expect the flags will be offered in most standard wargame scales, or at least those where figures for this conflict are available! These will definitely include 15mm, 25/28mm, and likely 6mm, with some in 54mm.

Projected Release: Spring, 2008

Gone To See The Elephant

Gone To See The Elephant: Miniatures Wargame Rules for the Mexican-American War, 1846-48

A fully dedicated set of rules for one of the most remarkable conflicts of the 19th Century, and one with consequences still felt to this day. GTSTE is a 1:20 scale set of rules that will allow players to experience the tactics and weapons of this war as no other rules set has. Using the basic game system of John Company , the game emphasizes Leadership, Resolve, Physical and Psychological condition of the troops, and even reflects political influences as well.

Perhaps one of the least understood and appreciated wars ever waged by the US, this was no "walk over," and the rules will reflect the advantages and weakness of both the Mexican and American Armies.

As with JC, the game will rely on Card Driven Movement, Orders, and Events, all very specifically based on conditions and actual experiences in Mexico--some of which will quite amaze you! There will also be resource material and information not to be found in most popular histories.

Full details (including specific OB's for all units engaged) of all the major battles will be provided, maps included. Part of the system will be a simple "Campaign" process by which battles may be played such that their outcomes can affect the next ones.

No written record keeping, with all game mechanics needing only regular D6, everything the game requires will come with it. All you have to do is cut out the Card Decks and Game Markers, and choose from several lines and scales of fine figures for this most "manageable" war. It is quite possible for two or three players--and certainly any club--to own every unit engaged in every battle. Try THAT with Napoleonics or ACW!

Now in development, we hope to be ready sometime by late this Summer. Look for progress and playtesting reports o be posted here at TVAG, and/or on the Yahoo! Mexican War Group.

Projected Release: Autumn, 2008

19th Century Chinese Flags

19th Century Chinese Flags Collection!

The newest additions now available are the first of the Boxer Rebellion Flags. With the same attention to artistry and historical accuracy, these represent the finest of their kind ever provided for wargaming.

The Tai-P'ing Rebellion Sets were the first of the line be released, and now there are five new Sets of Dragon Flags and Banners for Wangs and Generals.  Taken together with the flags of the "Imitation Foreign Devils," this part of the Collection is complete--for now!

The next additions will be a Set of Chinese Pirate Flags to be followed by the huge Imperial collection for the Manchus as they fought throughout the century.

Watch for them!

Next Projected Release: Manchu/Qing Flags, Autumn, 2008

The Casino "Mean Sets"

A total of 15 Sets have already been released and many more are in development. Among those in the works are the Egyptian Tomb, Mad Scientist's Lab, Haunted House, The Crypt, Evil Mastermind's Submarine, and more.

"Mean Sets" will eventually provide a great many other "traditional" Sets associated with Pulp Adventure and Horror.

Next Projected Release: Summer, 2008

Splendid Little Warriors! Splendid Little Warriors!
After a long hiatus, the 15mm sculptures by Chris Ferree originally sold by Richard Houston as part of his "Battles In A Box" series returns! The most complete line of properly uniformed miniatures and their weapons for the battles of San Juan Hill, El Caney, Rourke's Drift, and Moro Wars will now be produced for sale in units to match such games as The Sword And The Flame, 20th Anniversary Edition and its many variants, as well as Chris' own dedicated set of rules, Rough Riders! (see below). The figure moulds are in hand and a new master catalog has been assembled.

The figures for the Spanish-American War includes such items as Spanish Contra-Guerillas, Sailors and Marines, as well as Foreign Service troops in a variety of poses with command figures, not to mention U.S. Regulars, 1st Volunteer Cavalry, State Troops, specific castings for the all Black 9th and 10th Cavalry, 24th and 25th Infantry, plus Field Artillery, Sims-Dudley Dynamite Gun, Colt and Gatling Machine Guns, Hotchkiss Mountain Guns, and more.

The "Moro Wars!" line includes Philippine Constabulary, U.S. Regulars/Marines, and a wide range of Moro (and other) types for this nastiest of bush wars.

The "Rourke's Drift" figures, along with rules, card stock buildings, and all game materials, will also be made available as a set in much the same manner as before when it was part of the "Battles In A Box" series.

Projected release: Winter, 2008

Rough Riders Rough Riders!
From the prolific keyboard of Mr. Chris Ferree comes a unique system designed (as always!) from the ground up for this colorful and widely misunderstood and underappreciated period in history. Scaled at 1:10 and intended for 15mm (or smaller) figures, the rules include all the particulars necessary for the War of 1898 as fought in Cuba and the Philippines, including subsequent conflict with the Moros of Mindanao. Completely original, card driven, and exceptionally fast and "clean," no other set of rules on this subject has caught the essential problems of command and control as experienced by all forces engaged. Already widely play tested since its original release in 1998, this new edition is updated, clarified, and quicker than ever to "start up."

A special rules section for battles in Mindanao against the Moros and others are included which allow for not only for hidden movement, but random generation of terrain as U.S. Forces advance across country mastered by inhabitants whose fanaticism became legendary.

Projected release: Winter, 2008

We Only Kill Each Other "We Only Kill Each Other"
A unique set of skirmish rules portraying criminal activities from the 1920's to the 1950's, the era of Prohibition, Depression, and Film Noir. Finally, a set of rules that portrays the peculiar nature of these long term wars with short battles, where intimidation and influence were as important as measured violence.

In the past "cops and robbers" games attempted to treat the subject like a war game. The true nature of these conflicts is that there were very few battles and very poor "generals" and a highly inefficient leadership. Engagements were at the whim of fortune, and panic more often ruled the day than planning and operational expertise.

Characters are highly individualized, their actions and reactions equally dictated by blind luck and personal "rep" as much--or more--than intent. Play is simple, deadly and effected by psychology and personality. Rules include not just gunplay, but detailed (but playable) car chases, the moral effects of such things as police sirens, mob panic, and character "presence," as well as unforeseen circumstance. Further, Civilians play a crucial--if unwitting and involuntary--part as well! Heaven help the Gangster--or Cop!--who "drills" a citizen instead!

Play is also linked to Mean Streets (already available from TVAG), the highly detailed 28mm scale card stock City project, to provide the crucial and heretofore ignored geography of urban violence.

So, grab your "gat!" It's time for a torpedo like you to take goons what don't know how to cooperate for a one way ride. Just put 'em on ice before somebody yells, "Cheezit, the Cops!"

Projected release: Winter, 2008

Send A Gunboat "Send A Gunboat!"
Another victim of the Great Crash of '04, the line formerly known as "Boats 'N A Bag" has returned in an altogether new form in support of Boilers And Breechloaders, or any other use wargamers might have. This time, models are available either as PDF's for self printing, or fully assembled by my master modeler and designer, Richard Houston.

Further, models will now be duplicated in both 25mm and 15mm scales. At least three basic Hull types will be provided (Wooden, "Protected," and Armored), as well as in Screw Driven, Side-wheeler, and Sternwheeler configurations. To see the first releases, visit the Send A Gunboat Page for existing models and details.

Side Wheelers and Screw Driven designs, plus a new Junk and and four Prahu's have been completed and will go up as soon as their photos are ready!

Projected New Releases: Winter, 2008
